Wander Into Palawan’s Solace

Regarded as the Philippine’s last frontier, Palawan is an island and is also one of the country’s largest provinces. Located southwest of the Philippines, Palawan Island is north of Borneo, east of the China Sea and west of the Sulu Sea. Palawan is comprised of 24 municipalities, and Puerto Princesa which is the only city in the island and also its capital, is the most populated.

Palawan follows the same population pattern, and has fascinated people of all backgrounds who embraced the province as their own. It is said that Palawan residents are the product of 81 different cultural groups.

Versions of the island’s name “Palawan” has been in circulation for decades. Research tells us that its name could have been derived from the Chinese “Pa lao yu” which translates to “Land of the Beautiful Harbors”. It is also believed to have originated from a native plant called “Palwa”. However, the most famous belief is that it was obtained from the Spanish word “Paragua”, which means umbrella, consequently referring to the island’s closed umbrella shape.

Palawan is also home to the country’s ecofriendly resorts such as El Nido for the ecoreef installation due to previous damages caused by illegal fishing. Known for its infinite natural resources such as virgin forests, pristine waters, and world-renowned picturesque tourist spots, Palawan is also abundant with mangroves which are used for manufacturing textiles. Tourists and local visitors regard Palawan as one of the few unpolluted locations in the Philippines, devoid of noise and human traffic. People often mention that Palawan deserves an award for being the cleanliest and most nature-friendly city in the country. Visiting Dos Palmas, Crocodile Farm, Baker’s Hill, and the Underground River, to name a few, will make every traveler fall in love with Palawan.

Since its visitors treasure Palawan’s beauty and tranquility, they tend to adhere to the local government’s policies against littering, without question. Snorkelers also regard Palawan’s waters as, “breath-taking” and “out of this world”, especially when they have experienced swimming with schools of fish in locations such as Pandan and Snake Islands. Underneath the seas of Palawan, a display of varied and rare marine life constantly keeps snorkelers and divers in awe.

The clock stops ticking and everyone is held captive by Palawan’s arresting beauty. A jewel of the Pacific, and a heavenly dream you don’t want to wake up from. Palawan is a solace in itself with its incredible, clear skies that let you enjoy the showcase of sparkling constellations at night.
